Manufacturer Heritage

Taisei Engineering:
A Legacy of Innovation

1958

Foundation

Takuma Yamaguchi establishes Kokusai Senpaku Kogyo, the predecessor company, in Japan. His vision: to create a mechanical coupling system that would transform pusher-barge operations.

1963

First Pusher-Barge Project

The pusher-barge system is introduced in Japan for the Kobe Port Island reclamation project — one of the largest land reclamation projects in Japanese history.

1972

First Articouple Delivery

The first Articouple F-type coupler is installed on the 'Akashi-maru' for Nishinihon Pusher. This marks the beginning of a product line that will go on to achieve 336+ installations worldwide.

1975

Ocean-Going K-Type

The first K-type ocean-going coupler is completed, opening up coastal and ocean operations that were previously impossible with conventional pusher-barge systems.

1976

First International Delivery

Four HC-900PDM couplers are delivered to Far East Shipping of the USSR — the first international installations. The Baykalsk, Biryusinsk, Borsheretsk, and Bilibino mark the start of global expansion.

1980

First European Deliveries

Couplers are delivered to Norway's Bukser og Bjergning (Tofte 2) and Denmark's EM. Z. Svitzer (Sleipner). The European market opens.

1981

First South American Delivery

Couplers delivered to Sguera of Argentina — the Fernando S and Federico S. The global reach of Articouple continues to expand.

1985

Taisei Engineering Established

Taisei Engineering Co., Ltd. is formally established as the successor entity, with Kenji Sadakuni leading the company's continued growth and international expansion.

2010

Elmer A. Sperry Award

Taisei Engineering receives the Elmer A. Sperry Award — widely regarded as the Nobel Prize of the transportation engineering industry — for outstanding contribution to the advancement of transportation.

2018

301 Installations

The 301st Articouple/Triofix installation is completed, confirming Taisei Engineering's position as the world's most installed pusher-barge coupler manufacturer.

2026

336 Installations & European Representation

With 336 total installations worldwide, Articouple.EU is established as the authorized European partner, bringing dedicated regional support to the European market.

2010 Laureate

The Elmer A. Sperry Award

In 2010, Taisei Engineering Co., Ltd. was awarded the Elmer A. Sperry Award — widely regarded as the Nobel Prize of the transportation engineering industry. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to the advancement of transportation engineering.

The award was given in recognition of the Articouple and Triofix systems' transformative impact on maritime transport: enabling pusher-barge operations in ocean conditions previously impossible, reducing crew requirements, improving safety, and dramatically improving the economics of short-sea and coastal shipping.

Previous Sperry Award recipients include the inventors of the gyroscope, the jet engine, and the global positioning system. Taisei Engineering stands in distinguished company.
