Articouple & Triofix
Product Systems

Six models across two system families, covering every pusher-barge coupling requirement from inland waterways to trans-ocean operations. All systems are hydraulically operated and remote-controlled from the bridge.

Articouple Series

2-Pin Side Coupler Systems

Most Popular01

Articouple K-Series

Tooth-Engagement Side Coupler

The Articouple K-Series is a hydraulically operated, 2-pin side coupler of the multi-step tooth-engagement principle. It forms an extremely reliable mechanical connection through engagement of steel teeth on the connecting pin's Helmet with the Teeth arranged on the rearward wall of the barge's connecting Socket.

Connection Type2-pin side coupler
EngagementMulti-step tooth
OperationHydraulic, remote-controlled
Self-aligningYes
ApplicationCoastal & inland waters
Connection time30–45 seconds

Applications: Ideal for coastal trade, port operations, inland waterways, and short-sea shipping routes.

First Developed02

Articouple F-Series

Friction-Engagement Side Coupler

The Articouple F-Series was the original coupler design, first installed in 1972 on the 'Akashi Maru.' It operates on a friction-engagement principle where the Pressing Shoe is inserted into the Connecting Slot of the barge. Hard rubber lining on the forward and rearward faces of the Shoe is pressed onto the corresponding walls of the Slot to generate the connection force.

Connection Type2-pin side coupler
EngagementFriction (rubber lining)
OperationHydraulic, remote-controlled
Draught adaptationYes — continuous
ApplicationCoastal & inland waters
First delivery1972

Applications: Best suited for operations with variable cargo loading where draught changes during the voyage.

Combined System03

Articouple FR-Series

Combined Friction & Tooth Coupler

The Articouple FR-Series combines the advantages of both the F and K series in a single coupler. It employs a combined friction- and tooth-engagement principle, providing both the draught adaptability of the F-Series and the positive mechanical lock of the K-Series.

Connection Type2-pin side coupler
EngagementCombined friction + tooth
OperationHydraulic, remote-controlled
VersatilityHighest in range
ApplicationCoastal & inland waters
Draught adaptationYes

Applications: Recommended for versatile operations requiring both draught adaptability and positive mechanical lock.

Triofix Series

3-Pin Ocean-Going Systems

Ocean-Going01

Triofix TK-Series

3-Pin Rigid Tooth Coupler

The Triofix TK-Series is a hydraulically operated, 3-pin supported rigid connection type of multi-step tooth-engagement principle. It forms an extremely reliable mechanical connection through engagement of steel teeth, and the 3-point support (two side couplers + one bow coupler) creates a truly rigid connection between pusher and barge.

Connection Type3-pin rigid (2 side + 1 bow)
EngagementMulti-step tooth
OperationHydraulic, remote-controlled
SeaworthinessEquivalent to cargo ships
ApplicationOcean-going operations
Relative motionZero (rigid connection)

Applications: Designed for open ocean operations, trans-coastal routes, and any service requiring cargo ship-equivalent seaworthiness.

Articulated Ocean02

Triofix TR-Series

3-Pin Articulated Ocean Coupler

The Triofix TR-Series provides a 3-pin supported connection with a degree of controlled articulation, combining the seaworthiness of the TK with the ability to accommodate pitch and roll motions in severe sea states. This makes it particularly suitable for operations in the most demanding ocean environments.

Connection Type3-pin with controlled articulation
EngagementMulti-step tooth
OperationHydraulic, remote-controlled
Sea stateSevere ocean conditions
ApplicationDeep ocean, North Sea
Motion controlControlled articulation

Applications: Optimal for North Sea, North Atlantic, and other severe sea state environments where controlled articulation reduces structural stress.

Most Advanced03

Triofix TRF-Series

3-Pin Combined Friction & Tooth Ocean Coupler

The Triofix TRF-Series is the most advanced system in the Taisei Engineering range. It combines a 3-pin rigid connection with both friction- and tooth-engagement principles, providing excellent seaworthiness equivalent to ordinary cargo ships while additionally adapting to changes in barge draught due to loading and unloading.

Connection Type3-pin rigid
EngagementCombined friction + tooth
OperationHydraulic, remote-controlled
Draught adaptationYes — during operation
ApplicationOcean + variable draught
SeaworthinessEquivalent to cargo ships

Applications: The most versatile ocean-going system — ideal for operations combining ocean passages with cargo loading/discharge while connected.
